ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Joan Howell was born and raised in Middleboro Massachusetts, moving to California in 1979. She is a graduate of Mount Saint Mary’s College and has worked with the Los Angeles Unified School District’s reading and writing proficiency program.

In November of 1981, Joan founded the Institute for Self Realization, a non-profit corporation. The thrust of the organization was to help non-readers and educationally handicapped students overcome their fear of learning. Although the focus was on education, they also had a social component that was supported by the University of Southern California and UCLA. The United Way, Los Angeles Unified School District, The Los Angeles Sentinel, Charles Drew’s faculty, friends and family funded the Institute.

Joan has a Bachelors degree in both English and Education, a Master’s Equivalent in Educational Psychology and a Master’s Equiseta in Business.

Joan has worked as an English Professor and taught Computer Literacy at the American Business Institute. While employed at the American Business Institute, she developed and implemented a curriculum that was tailored for young adults with poor skills. In January of 2006, Joan earned a Juries Doctorate from Abraham Lincoln School of Law.

She still lives in Los Angeles.
